Kolsterising® does not apply a coating on the surface but results in a pure
diffusion zone from the surface inwards, with excellent toughness and no risk of
delamination or peeling. Kolsterising® increases the surface hardness of
austenitic stainless steels to a level of 1000 to 1200 Hv 0,05. In general the
effective diffusion depth varies between 20 and 40 µm, depending on the base
material and the treatment selection, K22 or K33. Kolsterised components exhibit
excellent fatigue properties due to high compressive stresses obtained in the
kolsterised case. Furthermore, finished components can be treated without need
for final re-machining since there are no significant dimensional, shape or
colour changes. Neither does the structure of the base metal
change.

- Improvement of the wear resistance, also inside small bores
- Prevention of "galling"
- Full retention of corrosion resistance (pre-requisit no deformation
martensite and delta ferrite in base material)
- Retention of non-magnetic properties
- Improvement of fatigue strength
- No addition of elements which were not already present in the
material

The max. operational temperature for treated parts is < 300°C, depending
on application and environment. Hence, any welding should be carried out prior
to the surface hardening treatment.
